Individualizing Student Support Services: A Quantitative Study Exploring a Holistic Approach to Improving Online Course Completion in Louisiana's Public Community Colleges
Maia J. Smith
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Online course enrollment is increasing but online course completion and retention rates are decreasing in public community colleges and this study suggests more increases in online course enrollment are underway. Student affairs professionals are met with adversity to provide adequate support to online students due to substandard administrative support, funding, academic preparation, and professional development regarding technology competency. Moreover, the profession lacks a widely accepted online student development theory to inform practice. This study intended to answer the overarching research question: "How do student affairs professionals impact online student satisfaction?" The findings of bivariate correlation testing confirmed relationships between online student satisfaction and student affairs professionals academic backgrounds and technology competency for the profession. The study results also revealed interrelationships between the four technology constructs that comprise technology competency for the student affairs profession. These relationships informed the student affairs profession about professional development for student affairs professionals who serve online students and decreased the literature gap in digital identity development.
