Women in Leadership Roles within Private International Baccalaureate (IB) Schools in Florida

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, St. Thomas University
The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore women's attitudes and perceptions in leadership roles within private International Baccalaureate (IB) schools in Florida; to gain a clear understanding of how they navigated the labyrinth and attain the head of school/leadership roles. A qualitative phenomenology approach was selected for the study because a phenomenology approach investigates the live experiences of participants. According to Connelly (2010), Patten (2014), and Sholl (2015), a qualitative process that focuses on the nature of people's experience and point of view is phenomenology research. The advantage of phenomenological research is that it provides a rich and detailed description of human experiences (Connelly, 2010; Patten, 2014; Sholl, 2015). Six female heads of schools in private Florida IB schools were recruited to participate in this study. Data was collected from the participants via Google forms and telephone/video interviews, and each interview was audio recorded. There were 20 open-ended questions designed to shed some light and answer the three research questions. The interview questions and transcribed audio were imported into NVIVO 12 and coded to identify patterns and emerging themes. The result revealed that women are capable of leading in IBDP as well as IBPYP and IBMYP, but it appears to be a matter of choice. And although there is a pipeline problem, if women are determined to lead, they can find creative ways for work-life balance. This research also discovered that women do lead with their intrinsic characteristics and the six participants in this study lead with visionary, coaching and diplomatic leading styles.
