The Predictability of Demographic, Academic, and Family-Related Factors on the Retention Rate of Freshman College Students
Pamelia Patterson Bunnitt
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grambling State University
The purpose of this quantitative study was to discuss the predictability between demographic, academic, and family-related factors on the retention rate of freshman college students. The researcher analyzed, through statistical analysis, each student's high school grade point average, first-semester grade point average, ACT/SAT scores, mother's educational level, father's educational level, type of household and family income on the retention rate of freshman college students. Based on research and experience, there was a direct relationship between academic achievement and retention rate (return or not return to college) of freshman college students. There was also a direct correlation between high school grade point average, first-semester grade point average, and ACT/SAT scores. Many believe that students perform better when they are academically prepared and pursue higher-level coursework. When creating a space for students to have a pronounced educational system that will provide the opportunity for a successful shift to higher education, it is imperative for the proper modes to be accessed. Because the world has entered into a time of becoming a completely globalized society, there are no limits to what students can accomplish once provided with the necessary means.
