The Recruitment and Retention of Generation Z Teachers
Marquita S. Braswell
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Regent University
The national shortage of teachers is cause for great concern. What was once considered a noble profession is not viewed with the same outlook today, particularly by young people. As a result, primary and secondary students suffer because of the startling number of teachers who leave every year. Furthermore, school districts are challenged to attract and retain the best teachers to ensure students receive a quality education. Generation Z, the newest generation to enter the workforce, may fill many teacher vacancies if they find satisfaction in the workplace. This current study aimed to examine workplace factors that will impact Generation Z teachers' recruitment and retention. The qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of six Generation Z teachers who identified workplace factors that drew them to the profession, factors that provide satisfaction and dissatisfaction, and factors that will retain them. This study utilized three data sets: an open-ended questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group discussion. Data were collected and analyzed for themes. The study's findings were organized and supported based upon Frederic Herzberg's two-factor theory, which states different factors in the workplace cause employee job satisfaction and employee job dissatisfaction.
