Leann Weaver
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
Senior adults are not given development curriculum skills to help with technology to enhance their socialization and quality of life. The purpose of this qualitative, explanatory, single case study was to explain how a senior citizens center supports the curriculum development to help senior adults, age group 55 and over, acclimate to technology and communication to enhance their socialization and quality of life and to learn why some senior citizens may underestimate their ability to learn about technology. Two research questions supported the study, RQ1: How do senior citizen center programs include curriculum to help senior citizens acclimate to technology and communication to enhance their socialization and quality of life? RQ2: Why do some senior citizens hesitate to learn technology to enhance their quality of life? The sample size included four administrative staff, 14 senior citizens, and documents from the senior citizen center. Data analysis consisted of three phases, dramatic analysis for analyzing responses, and analyzing newsletters. The findings shared four emerging themes including, the importance of computers, equipment, having an instructor, and ongoing training. The findings and results of the study shared recommendations for senior citizen centers regarding the importance of teaching seniors to use technology to improve communication and quality of life. Recommendations to leaders and practitioners shared the importance for classes to offer socialization as well as educational opportunities, offer a variety of different levels, provide a curriculum that offers a combination of theories, supports a positive and safe learning environment, and teaches real-life situations with technology.
