Closing the Pedagogical Gap: A Look at the Recruitment Practices of African American Teachers
Angerina L. Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Regent University
This action research study examined and suggested strategic programs and practices to recruit more African American public school teachers. Collected interview and focus group data were analyzed using the modified van Kaam method and NVivo 12© software to identify themes regarding programmatic recommendations supporting the recruitment of African American teachers. Four themes emerged from the data analysis process: (a) recruitment efforts, (b) district issues, (c) pedagogical hindrances, and (d) teacher preparation. Findings from this study were used to suggest the participating district establish partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Grow Your Own programs as a means to improve their efforts to recruit African American teachers. Chapter 5 is comprised of an executive summary, which entails a concise outline of this entire study. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
