The Career Search of College Graduates with Autism
Elizabeth Hall
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of St. Thomas (Houston)
The qualitative study used two case studies to explore the career search experience of college graduates with autism. The study included interviews with college graduates diagnosed with ASD, interviews with family members of the college graduate, and interviews with hiring supervisors of the college graduates with ASD to glean information regarding the perception of the career search and employment of a college graduate with autism. The data analysis process consisted of five steps for a case study: 1) data management; 2) reading and memoing ideas, 3) describing and classifying into codes and themes, 4) developing and assessing interpretations, 5) representing and visualizing (Creswell & Poth, 2018). The study findings indicate a need for college students to prepare for searching for work, from understanding how to market skills in a written job application to mastering the job interview. Additionally, it is crucial for employers and society to have knowledge of the needs and methods to support this diverse population to succeed in a society that does not mesh with their abilities. This study provides individuals with autism, families, potential employers, and institutions of higher education practices to support the successful employment of college graduates with autism.
