Using Multiple Exemplar Training to Train Direct Support Professionals to Accurately Report Functional Assessment Data
Danielle Gender-Walters
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
The purpose of this study was to determine an effective training method of improving direct support professionals' (DSPs) ability to accurately and descriptively report antecedent, behavior, and function. A training method, multiple exemplar training (MET), which is not typically applied to this population, was utilized to determine its effectiveness outside of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, the researcher also sought to determine whether direct training of listener behavior would result in generalization of the skill to untrained speaker behavior. The researcher selected a multiple-baseline design across each component of the three-term contingency, being identifying the antecedent, operational definition, and consequence/hypothesized function. Participants included three DSPs working at a residential service provider supporting adults with an intellectual disability. All three participants showed improvement in listener behavior in all three tiers due to MET. These results indicate that the training package of MET plus feedback was effective in improving participants' functional assessment reporting skills. There was also an improvement in speaker behavior with no direct training, but as a result of the training of listener behavior. It is recommended that future research include a maintenance phase to see if the skill is maintained over a period of time. Additionally, future researchers should see if the skill is generalized to the work or natural environmental setting and if there is an actual improvement in functional assessment data collection.
