A Phenomenological Study: Choosing to Continue Teaching When Undergoing Burnout

The impact of burnout on elementary teachers in Nevada leads to teacher attrition. Teacher burnout leading to attrition affects low socio-economic schools disproportionately, resulting in depleted human capital resources and impacting student learning. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of burnout experienced by elementary teachers and their ongoing choice to continue working in the elementary school setting in Nevada. Qualitative semi-structured face-to-face interview data were gathered utilizing an audio recording. Interviews were transcribed for data analysis to understand elementary school teachers' lived experiences in Nevada and their choice to teach despite experiencing burnout. A final sample of 12 Nevada elementary school teachers from a low socio-economic school participated in the study. Trint (https://trint.com) was used to transcribe data using artificial intelligence and later coded to classify themes. Two major themes emerged from the interview data and were used to respond to the research question. Based on the results, practice recommendations were made in two major areas: (a) helping teachers who experience emotional exhaustion from lack of support and (b) building peer relationships that had the most significant impact on an elementary teacher's choice to continue teaching. Additionally, recommendations for further research were made in two areas: (a) exploring quantifying correlation study on the number of times an elementary school teacher experiences burnout within a school year and (b) expanding this phenomenological study to include burnout experienced by Nevada middle and high school teachers and their ongoing choice to continue teaching.
