Teachers' Perceptions of Bullying and School Violence in a Middle School in North Carolina
Eldorado Brown
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Argosy University/Seattle
The issue of bullying and school violence is a growing concern to administrators, counselors, and teachers across the country. Different incidents of aggressive bullying and school violence beginning in the 1990s have made worldwide news that focuses on school safety and the problems aggressive bullying behaviors and school violence can cause. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate teachers' perceptions of bullying and school violence in a middle school. To address the many problems of bullying and school violence in middle schools, administrators, counselors, and teachers need more professional development training and effective preventions and intervention programs to minimize and eliminate aggressive bullying behaviors and school violence. An interpretative, qualitative research method was appropriate for this study because the researcher intended to generate a shared meaning of this phenomenon as seen from the perspective of administrators, counselors, and teachers using face-to-face, open-ended, semi-structured interviews. Involving parents and increased awareness of aggressive bullying behaviors will help to create a positive school environment. During the data collection process, data were analyzed, and as patterns emerged and were identified, the data were organized through coding and categorized to get a broader view of the responses from the participants. The participants' views of the BP-PBS program could help to decrease incidents of bullying and teach administrators, teachers, and counselors how to appropriately respond to aggressive bullying behaviors and school violence. Based on the qualitative data of this study, aggressive bullying, school violence, and cyber-bullying can cause lifelong emotional and psychological damage to students.
