Rodell Garay Asher
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand how graduates of a community college leadership development program described the application of skills gained from the program and the contribution of those skills on their Leadership Self-Efficacy (LSE) in the workplace, in the Southwest Region of the United States. Bandura's theory of Self-Efficacy was the vessel for the domain of leadership, thus, the conceptual framework used was Leadership Self-Efficacy (LSE). The research questions focused on how the graduates of a community college leadership development program, who are full-time employed, described: (1) the skills gained from the program and applied in their workplaces; and (2) the skills gained from the program that contributed to their Leadership Self-Efficacy in their workplaces. The use of purposive sampling generated 19 participants and the three sources of data included a questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group. Saldana's coding methods for thematic analysis were utilized for data analysis. Findings from the study indicated that graduates of a community college leadership development program applied the leadership skills gained from the program and resulted in the skills that contributed to their LSE in their workplaces. Data analysis resulted in the development of four themes: (1) "Understanding how to apply leadership skills through the program's myriad enrichment opportunities," (2) "Increased awareness of leadership skill applications in the workplace through critical reflections," (3) "Personal growth in LSE through elements of performance accomplishments," and (4) "Establishing relationships together with effective communications contributed to LSE in their workplaces."
