Midwest Safety Christian School Parents' Perspectives on Having Trained and Armed Staff at School as a Best Practice in School Safety

School safety is an important topic, and the existing trends in school shootings have increased the desire for implementing best practices in the safety of schools. Implementing trained and armed staff has been suggested for consideration as a best practice, but parents' perspectives on such has not been studied. The gap in research related to having trained and armed staff at school as a best practice in school safety and parents' perspectives on school safety informed this study. The qualitative analysis from a pragmatic paradigm used interviews to examine parents' perspectives of having trained and armed staff as a best practice in school safety. Data was collected from 22 parents in a Kindergarten through Grade 8 Christian School named Midwest Safety Christian School (pseudonym). Data analysis created three themes: events and experiences inform parents' perspectives, parents (95.5%) support having trained and armed staff at Midwest Safety Christian School, and parents' responses varied when considering the best response in a mass school shooting event. Results indicate that implementing trained and armed staff should be considered for implementation at Midwest Safety Christian School.
