Elementary Principals' Experiences Using Transformational Leadership to Promote Positive School Climates
Dawn Kirven
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Capella University
This study investigated the experiences of elementary principals using transformational leadership to promote a positive school climate at the elementary level. Previous research determined leadership styles of principals and their effects on the schools, all using the perspectives of teachers and students. There was a gap in the research on perspectives directly from the principals and what they are doing to promote such positive school climates. The purpose of the study was to answer the following question: How do the experiences of elementary principals using a transformational leadership style promote a positive climate of the school? The study was qualitative using a narrative research approach, interviewing current principals to determine the values, norms, beliefs, and practices used in leading the school as a transformational leader. The population of the study included five elementary school principals who have at least five years or more of experience in their schools and whose school scored 85% or higher in the area of school climate on the state report card. The principals were determined to have transformational leadership qualities as they completed a transformational leadership survey before participation in the study. The results from the research aligned with previous literature and found the principals to collectively agree on four major points: transformational leadership is continuous growth and requires change, a positive climate takes on the characteristics of the leader and is defined as a "feeling," transformational leaders present clear expectations and motivate stakeholders to support the vision or goal for their school, and relationships with stakeholders are the key to positive school climates. University scholars and researchers could further the study to enhance principal preparation programs as well as improve school climate at all levels.
