A Case Study on Administrator Fidelity during the Implementation and Development of the Pathways Project Initiative
Albert Talley Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The problem that was addressed in this qualitative case study was that student retention and graduation rates at community colleges have been affected by the lack of support provided to students during their academic careers. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain an understanding of how administrators perceived they were acting in the best interest of their college and its stakeholders as they approached the development and implementation of the Pathways Project initiative. A qualitative case study was undertaken based on the theory of large-scale change, which guides organizations through steps to development, implementation, and redevelopment of practices in order to achieve desired results. Interview data with eight administrators and document review at one community college in Texas was conducted to determine what approaches administrators used when implementing the Pathways Project. Inductive analysis was used to analyze the interview data, which were arranged into six themes to respond to the two research questions. The approaches demonstrated by administrators included the use of data to drive change, being prepared for continuous change, and working to reduce student barriers. Administrators emphasized professional development and stakeholder buy-in of the initiative and included stakeholders as they developed and implemented new approaches. The results suggest administrators planning to implement the Pathways Project initiative can achieve greater success by acting with fidelity and being inclusive of college-wide stakeholders. Administrators also believed the inclusion of stakeholders and creation of committees and councils allowed for better evaluation of programs and departments within the college.
