Mayra L. Fuentes
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Texas A&M University - Commerce
Latina students are the least likely to succeed in college. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that motivate and influence Latina students who are first-generation in college to enroll and stay in college. In this quantitative research the following questions were used to guide the study: (1) What are the key motivational factors that influence the intentions of a first-generation Latina student to enroll in college? (2) What are the key motivational factors that influence the intentions of those who are not first-generation Latina students to enroll in college? (3) What are the key motivational factors that influence the decision of a first-generation Latina student to stay in college? The researcher found the independent variables that were statistically significant were having friends as an encouragement source, living with parents or relatives, being an adult caregiver, and even having taken remedial courses.
