Black Sorority Women's Experiences with Racism and Sexism at Predominantly White Institutions
Ashlee Louise Canty
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, DePaul University
The intersection of both race and gender are significant in understanding the experiences of Black women. Black sorority membership provides a space where the intersection of both race and gender are valued and understood. Black sororities also provide a sense of belonging, advocacy, and support to assist Black women at PWIs in navigating racism and sexism. While more Black students are attending PWIs, there has been a lack of attention paid to creating equity within systems that continue to marginalize Black women in predominantly white spaces. Using a phenomenological approach, this dissertation explores the experiences of racism and sexism faced by Black sorority women at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and the impact of membership in a historically Black sorority.
