Lisa Marie Tariq
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Wisconsin
This study addresses the growing need for effective professional development programs to enhance technology integration in classrooms. Through a comprehensive literature review, the research identifies best practices in professional development that can increase teacher self-efficacy and equip them with the necessary skills for 21st-century instruction. The review explores three key questions: (1) What are the core features of effective professional development? (2) How has the implementation of effective technology professional development impacted individual perceptions and attitudes towards technology integration within their classroom? (3) In what ways are instructional practices influenced by effective professional development surrounding technology? By examining these questions, the research aims to contribute valuable insights to the current understanding of successful professional development strategies for promoting technology use in education. The findings revealed what teachers viewed as effective professional development and how these experiences influence their integration of technology within their classrooms. When investigating features of effective professional development, teachers identified the following themes: hands on approach and engagement, realistic expectations, teacher input and frequency of delivery. Despite beliefs towards effective professional development, participants reflected on the barriers that hinder their self-efficacy towards implementing new technology within the classroom including: time and support. These were addressed as being overcome through: classroom integration and modeling. The insights gained from this research will be invaluable for current and future educational leaders and educators.
