Forging the Path: Unveiling the Grit of Female Superintendents in Arizona
Erika J. Copeland
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Arizona University
Women are underrepresented in the superintendency of public schools. They are also underrepresented in the research about superintendents. Researchers report that male superintendents have been studied in terms of demographic makeup, stresses, career paths, leadership traits, and other indicators of success. Only in recent years has there been a growing interest among researchers in examining female superintendents as a distinct group. This shift reflects a broader recognition of the need to address gender disparities in educational leadership. Grit is characterized as a blend of perseverance and unwavering passion toward achieving long-term goals. Research highlights the predictive power of grit in achieving challenging pursuits and how it outperformed other measures of talent. This study delves into the unique challenges faced by women in Arizona seeking and serving as superintendents. It specifically explores how the personal traits of grit influence women's ability to overcome these barriers and achieve success in their roles. The study contributes valuable insights into strategies for supporting and advancing women in top educational leadership positions by exploring these dynamics.
