This qualitative study aimed to explore retention at human service organizations by identifying employees' level of attachment to their organization. The results of this study can directly impact the quality of care for individuals utilizing inpatient and outpatient substance use treatment services and increase the quality of employee experience. Four research questions were examined: (a) Do employees at human service organizations experience place attachment and meaningful place? If so, how? (b) What contributes to employees' sense of place attachment and meaningful place at human service organizations? (c) Can human service organizations improve employee retention? If so, how?, and (d) Does place attachment and meaningful place contribute to employee retention? If so, how? The theoretical frameworks of place attachment and meaningful place were used to guide interview questions and data analysis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 employees at human service organizations that specialize in treating substance use disorders in a northeastern city/suburb in the United States. Themes identified from exploring employee experience at these organizations included: (a) interconnectedness through familial or personal relationships, (b) interconnectedness to space based or peer-to-peer relationships, (c) connection to physical space, (d) environmental connections to meaningful place, (e) employee contributions towards creating a sense of place, (f) negligence towards employee retention, and (g) the impact of intentionally creating meaningful places. The goal of these interviews was to better understand how employees develop attachment or meaning to their workplace. Implications for practice and theory, limitations, and recommendations for future research are also included.
