This quantitative methodological research study explored the relationship between compassion and mattering experience from the perspective of leaders and direct reports working in administrative and support functions at a higher education institution. The following two research questions are explored: (1) What is the relationship between compassion and the mattering experience from the perspective of leaders and direct reports in higher education institutions? (2) What are the ways a leader demonstrates compassion to direct reports in a higher education institution? The compassion and mattering experience in the workplace theoretical framework used posits that compassion and mattering experience within leaders and direct reports help to achieve an increase in work productivity and happiness and engagement at work for the direct reports in an organization. Outcomes from an online survey instrument administered to leaders and direct reports working in administrative and support functions in a higher education institution are used to form the basis of examination. Data analysis from this study supported the first research question and confirmed that, (1) there was a statistically significant positive relationship between compassion and interpersonal mattering experience within leaders and direct reports together and (2) there was no significant relationship between compassion and organizational mattering experience within leaders and direct reports together. The thematic analysis of the open-ended responses of the survey answered the second research question and provided the different ways that compassion behaviors demonstrated by leaders increases the mattering experience for direct reports in establishing a positive climate in the higher education. Implications for practice and theory are included. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC. Further reproduction is prohibited without permission.
