An Exploration of the BIPOC Graduate Student Experience and Factors Impacting Mental Health and Well-Being
Lauren S. Carter
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The purpose of this phenomenological narrative study was to explore the BIPOC graduate student experience and factors impacting mental health and well-being. The researcher interviewed 10 BIPOC graduate students to explore how the graduate student experience affects their mental health and overall well-being. Additionally, the study explored campuses' mental health and well-being resources and their ability to align with students' intersecting identities and provide adequate care during times of need. Participants perceived that the graduate student experience could adversely impact BIPOC individuals' mental health and holistic well-being while providing professional development and growth opportunities. Furthermore, the researcher concluded that many campuses' mental health and well-being resources do not frequently align with their students' intersecting identities, and being able to provide adequate care during times of need varies. Implications for practice include recommendations for creating environments that promote the mental health and academic success of BIPOC graduate students while also contributing to a more equitable and thriving campus community for all.
