Parent Engagement with Border Public Schools: Perceptions and Perspectives of Latino Junior High Parents
Yvette L. Koval
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Arizona University
The purpose of this study was to examine Latino parent perspectives on parent engagement at the junior high level, focusing on experiences both at home and at school. Qualitative data was gathered from Latino parents of junior high students in Texas through bilingual focus groups and individual interviews. Themes synthesized from participant responses shed light on Latino parent perceptions of engagement with public schools in a border state. The research underscores the pivotal role of effective communication and partnership between schools and Latino parents in promoting student success. Five research questions elucidate various aspects of this engagement dynamic, including the need for clear communication channels, collaborative partnerships, addressing communication barriers, providing spaces for parent learning and community building, and adapting policies post-pandemic. Employing Lat Crit analysis, the study highlights the researcher's awareness of the intersectionality of race, culture, and language in the education system. Ultimately, the findings stress the importance of culturally responsive practices and proactive leadership in facilitating meaningful engagement between schools and Latino parents to support student achievement and well-being.
