An Investigation of the Relationship between Institutional Control and NCLEX First-Time Pass Rates

This quantitative study investigated the relationship between institutional control and NCLEX first-time pass rates during 2017-2021 for BSN, ADN, and LVN programs in the United States while controlling for school and program level characteristics. The study included five years of data gathered from nursing regulatory agencies and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) database, representing 48 states and the District of Columbia. Multiple linear regression, with institutional control as the independent variable, first-time NCLEX pass rate as the dependent variable, and covariates that included school and program level characteristics, showed a statistically significant relationship between institutional control and pass rates, even after controlling for school and program characteristics. Compared to public institutions, private nonprofit schools had lower pass rates in BSN and ADN programs. Private for-profit schools had the lowest pass rates across all three program types. This study demonstrates an ongoing trend of institutional control predicting first-time NCLEX pass rates, specifically predicting lower pass rates among private institutions. Additional monitoring of this trend in the post-pandemic era is warranted, particularly in light of the recent transition to Next Generation NCLEX testing format.
