Exploring LGBTQ Students' Awareness and Perceptions of Their Institution's Bias Reporting Form at Private Colleges and Universities in the South
Brian Wells Daniel
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, (LGBTQ) students experience a chillier campus climate on college and university campuses than do their heterosexual peers (Rankin et al., 2010). Colleges and universities have worked to expand resources for LGBTQ students. Campus Pride, Inc. developed the Campus Pride Index (CPI) that allows colleges and universities to showcase various resources they provide to prospective students and their families (Garvey et al., 2017). Yockey (2019) noted that bias incident reporting forms are a resource some colleges and universities offer to their students. This study explored the extent to which LGBTQ students at small, private, colleges and universities in the South are aware of their institution's bias reporting form, as well as the likelihood LGBTQ students will report instances of anti-LGBTQ bias and hate. A questionnaire was distributed to LGBTQ students at three colleges that have been listed on the Campus Pride Index. This study revealed that LGBTQ students are likely to report instances of anti-LGBTQ bias and hate they experience on campus. While there was a significant difference in the knowledge among LGBTQ students of whether or not their institution offered a bias reporting tool, institutions that had LGBTQ Student Centers and full-time LGBTQ support staff increased the likelihood of LGBTQ student awareness of their institution's reporting form but did not equate to a stronger likelihood of reporting. Implications for Bias Incident Teams, LGBTQ support staff, senior administrators, and prospective LGBTQ students and their families are shared.
