A Qualitative Study Analyzing Effectiveness of New York City Higher Education Preparation Programs in the 21st Century Learning Environment
Jennifer L. Shanks
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Marymount University
This study aimed to identify the themes teacher preparation programs need to improve their current curriculum. The research focused on teacher preparation programs, professional development opportunities, technology use and integration methods, college and career readiness in PreK-12 students, ISTE Educator and Student Standards, and 21st Century Skills as per the Partnership for 21st Century Framework. The theoretical framework used is an adaptive table from Leibbrandt's work in 2005 compared to the International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) Educator Standards from 2017. The sample of this study included recent graduates and new teachers of PreK-12 students in New York City. The data collection method was a questionnaire developed using the ISTE Educator Standards language to evaluate the program curriculum. Data was collected through a post on social media platforms through Google Forms. The data analysis was conducted using the Delve Analytic Tool and a thematic approach. Three themes have been determined based on participant responses. The themes identified were Lack of Technology Integration, Earlier Classroom Experiences, and Real World Authentic Experiences. The themes were discovered based on the open-ended responses from the participants who completed this questionnaire. Future research and recommendation suggest that researchers look at a potential connection between the ISTE Student Standards and Leibbrandt's work in 2005. There is also room to connect the ISTE Educator Standards to the Danielson Framework from 2013, which is the rating system used for New York City Educators.
