The Missing Piece: African American Student Voices on Out-of-School Suspension
India Hilliard
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene University
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore African American students and school administrators' experiences with out-of-school suspension (OSS) and their perceptions of strategies to reduce suspensions. Researchers have identified research-based strategies to reduce OSS, including restorative practices and Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS). However, those directly impacted by OSS have seldom been included in conversations about reducing out-of-school suspensions. Semi-structured interview protocols were used to interview 10 African American high school students and 4 school administrators. Data were analyzed to identify themes to answer the study's research questions. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
