A Qualitative Study of the Use of Kindergarten Readiness Assessments
Elizabeth Rupnik
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
This basic qualitative study aimed to understand how the results of the kindergarten readiness assessments are used within the classroom for planning curriculum, connecting to learning standards, and implementing individualized instruction, along with kindergarten teachers' perspectives on the usefulness of kindergarten readiness testing. The results of this study will provide educators with information that can be used to understand kindergarten testing and how the data are used within school districts. Within Pennsylvania, kindergarten readiness assessments are used in school districts to assess students prior to entering kindergarten. The study questioned ten kindergarten teachers from school districts within Pennsylvania about the use of the assessment results used in the district. The study also examined the kindergarten readiness document used within the participating educator's district to compare similarities and differences between assessments in the districts. The kindergarten teachers provided perspectives through an open-ended questionnaire, and the information was then coded using open and axial coding. This study helped to fill the gaps in the research related to the usefulness of the kindergarten readiness assessment and its results. Continued research would be beneficial to understand better how the results are used within other states. The information learned from other states can help other districts better understand and utilize the results within the classrooms.
