Brian E. Arnold
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
This qualitative exploratory case study addresses the pervasive issue of inequality in educational hiring practices, specifically focusing on the underrepresentation of Black educators and administrators in leadership roles. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to gain the perspectives of the experiences of Black educators applying for educational leadership positions, shedding light on whether they encountered racial and implicit prejudice during the application process. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding the barriers faced by Black educators aspiring to attain leadership positions. The central research question explores the lived experiences of Black educators in their pursuit of educational leadership roles, aiming to uncover instances of racial and implicit bias. The research method involves qualitative exploration, utilizing in-depth interviews to gain insights into the personal encounters of the participants. Nine Black educators reported if they had experienced racial and implicit prejudice when they applied for jobs. The Participants were asked What are the perceptions and experiences of Black educators on public school hiring practices for leadership positions, Interviews and focus groups were conducted and the data used a thematic and narrative analysis. The study reveals the expectation for Black educators to surpass standards and work harder for recognition and advancement, shedding light on the challenges they face in a system that demands exceptional performance, extending beyond qualifications alone, thereby making it difficult for them to feel they can ever do enough to reach parity with their counterparts. Future research should concentrate on continued barriers to attaining leadership positions. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
