Social Identity Theory: African American Male Community College Students' Perceptions of African American Male Community College Instructors at a Community College
Cyrus J. Vance
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
While community colleges benefit from an increase in African American (AA) male students enrolling at their institutions, a disproportionate number of AA males enroll in college and do not complete a certificate or degree compared to those who earn a certificate or degree. This qualitative study explored how AA male students at community colleges perceived their relationships with AA male instructors and how these relationships mattered to their college experience. The study aimed to deepen understanding of this dynamic and contribute to research on AA male students' perceptions in community colleges using phenomenological research and semi-structured interviews.
