Women Leaders: How Women in Community College Leadership Experience Gender Bias
Jason L. Davis
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Doane University
The issue of gender bias has been studied in many facets of society, including business, education, and leadership in general. Researchers and professionals working in the field have long had concerns over the issue of gender bias: if it is occurring, what does the rate and impact have on overall success in leadership? Women in upper-level positions in higher education leadership have not been at the same pace as their male colleagues in advanced leadership roles and pay. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how women leaders have experienced gender bias in leadership roles in the community college system in Nebraska. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven women leaders at community colleges in Nebraska. Stories were collected to provide an in-depth look at how gender bias impacts women in community college leadership in Nebraska. Three major themes were found. The first theme is that women leaders in community colleges in Nebraska experienced gender bias. The second is that male leaders are viewed to have more privileges and opportunities than female leaders. The third theme related to this phenomenon is that women leaders accepted and expected gender bias. The results were that women leaders working in community colleges do and have experienced gender bias and that it occurs at multiple levels of a woman's career. The participants shared examples of incidents from blatant bias to examples of subtle but clear bias. In addition to gender bias occurring, participants also shared examples of how it was expected in the workplace and that they have joined organizations and taken steps toward eliminating bias. This study is one of the first to investigate the lived experience of women leaders currently working in community colleges in Nebraska.
