Race, Age, and Prior Educational Attainment as Predictors of Vocational Program Participation or Completion in a Virginia Prison: A Phenomenological Study

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Regent University
Research in adult education demonstrates the role that correctional education plays in the reduction of recidivism. Studies on general education development (GED), college courses, and vocational or job training have shown that any form of correctional education correlates to a reduction in recidivism for those who participate. Research in the past has focused on GED or college programs with little examination of the benefit of vocational or job training programs offered. All Virginia prisons offer a variety of educational opportunities to inmates; however, the Bureau of Justice Statistics indicated that few inmates participate in the correctional education programs offered at their facility. There is a need to understand the demographic variables that predict participation or completion of vocational programs in Virginia prisons. Understanding these variables will help program planners reach those individuals who are not being served by present program offerings. This qualitative phenomenological study consisted of interviews with a corrections officer at one of Virginia's maximum security prisons. The results of this study showed that age is a significant predictor of correctional vocational program participation and completion.
