Teacher Turnover in a Texas Public School: A Case Study

Teacher turnover is a high priority topic within Texas Public Schools. Educator concerns were not being properly addressed, causing annual teacher shortage. The purpose of this single qualitative case study was to investigate educators' perceptions of factors that influence teacher retention and turnover. The central research question for this case study was: What are teachers' and principals' perspectives on teacher turnover in Texas public schools? Five sub-questions that guided the study were: How do teachers and principals perceive teacher retention in Texas public schools? How do teachers and principals perceive teacher attrition in Texas public schools? What organizational factors do teachers and principals perceive as influencing retention in Texas public schools? What individual factors do teachers and principals perceive as influencing attrition in Texas public schools? What suggestions do teachers and principals have for reducing teacher turnover in Texas? The participants consisted of ten teachers and five principals of a former school in Texas. Findings revealed four major themes: lack of support, dissatisfaction with salaries, unfriendly school climates, and negative perceptions of organizational practices.
