A Phenomenological Study: The Lived Experiences of the Latina "Madre" and Her Journey of Baccalaureate Degree Attainment
Bianca Abigail Tarango
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, New Mexico State University
In recent years, advancement has been documented in the literature about the educational attainment among Latinas. However, a review of the literature revealed limited research on the educational experiences of the Latina "madre." This phenomenological study contributes to the existing knowledge about the lived experiences of the Latina "madres'" baccalaureate degree attainment journey by exploring the shared experiences of 10 Latina "madres" from the Southwest Borderlands. Through Chicana feminist epistemology, this study also acknowledged that Chicana scholars bring a unique perspective that contributes to the research process. Drawing from Chicana feminist thought, Xicanisma was utilized to honor Latinas' diversity while also emphasizing the similarities of their experiences. Xicanisma was used to explore the unique experiences of the Latina "madre" without ignoring the intersectionalities of their gender, ethnicity, and culture and used phenomenology as a research inquiry to identify the overarching themes that shed light on how the Latina "madres" experienced their journeys. This research study identified four overarching themes, "familia," culture and gender, barriers and challenges, and resolve where culture and gender influenced "familia" and set expectations of the Latina "madre." The participants described similarities in the barriers and challenges they faced (childcare, time, energy, and financial burdens). However, ultimately, Latina "madres'" resolve, as represented in her will, resoluteness, and determination to achieve her desired goal, was the essence that empowered her baccalaureate degree attainment. The shared experiences and themes deepen the understanding of the complexities of negotiating gender, ethnicity, culture, and many other intersections, straddled with the barriers and challenges experienced and being a Latina, a student, and a "madre."
