Physical Environmental Factors That Influence Community College Online Learner Success
Jon A. Jensen
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
The purpose of this non-experimental correlational survey study was to examine the correlation between physical environmental factors and perceived online learner success for current online community college students who have reported success in a previous online course. The study uses the community of inquiry framework with examined physical environmental factors related to the three elements of the community of inquiry framework; Social presence, cognitive presence, and teaching presence. Survey results indicate limited but significant correlations, though data was skewed. Data indicates correlations between physical environmental factors and online learner success that are congruent with research on face to face learning. Results indicate correlational directions that can inform future quasi-experimental or action research, as well as giving direction to online learners in the design of their physical environment while engaging in online learning.
