Latinx First-Generation College Students' Meaning-Making about Relational Resilience and Resistance
Cassandra Guercia
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, William James College
The purpose of this current study was to explore the experiences of Latinx first-generation students in four-year undergraduate college programs. This research also explored what had contributed to these students' dedication to obtaining their degrees and how they had made meaning of relational resilience and resistance in light of their experiences. Nine Latinx first-generation college students, ranging in age from 18 to 33 years, participated in confidential individual interviews. Eight interviews were completed through videoconferencing, and one was completed in-person. A thematic analysis of the data gathered from all interviews identified six meta-themes. These included: experiences prior to college (n=9), goals (n=9), sources of support (n=9), challenges (n=9), recommendations (n=9), and navigating between cultures (n=8). These meta-themes and their respective subthemes are outlined in this research. The participants' practices of relational resilience and relational resistance, as interpreted by this researcher from the data, are also discussed. Limitations of the study, recommendations for future research, and clinical implications and recommendations for clinical and educational practice are outlined. Finally, the author provided her personal reflections on conducting this research as a first-generation, non-Latina psychology doctoral student with a concentration in Latinx Mental Health.
