An Examination of an Innovation Lab in a Private School: Student Perceptions and Behaviors
Micquel Sanders; Stephanie Jones-DuBose
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lipscomb University
This qualitative study was completed to examine students' behaviors and perceptions of an innovation lab in a private school that utilized the design thinking process. The researchers sought to understand students' perceptions of the i-lab in relation to empathy, critical thinking, and communication, which were key constructs of the design thinking process and the school's core values. Additionally, the researchers sought to discover if and how the i-lab provided an opportunity for students to empathize, demonstrate critical thinking skills, as well as describe student communication between peers and the i-lab teacher. Participants for this study were third through 12th-grade students enrolled at Believer Academy who interacted with the lab. The researchers utilized student questionnaires, focus groups, and observations to gather qualitative data. The data were analyzed through the pre-determined themes of empathy, critical thinking, and communication. Through the analysis process, three more themes arose: time, organization, and age-related differences. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
