Mentors' Reflections of a State-Wide Mentoring Program for High School Immigrants: "They Give Me Hope!"
Ivana Martinez
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Marymount University
This descriptive, cross-sectional, mixed methods study focused on an anonymous state-wide nonprofit organization in a mid-Atlantic state and the perspectives and insights of the mentors who work directly with first-generation immigrant high school students as they assist their mentees through the college and scholarship application process. The researcher surveyed and interviewed volunteer mentors on their experiences guiding this population toward post-secondary educational opportunities using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The mentoring program matches an adult with a high school immigrant senior for one-on-one, once-weekly virtual sessions from September to April or for eight months. This study contributed to the research on the benefits of mentorship programs for this student population, how these students' strengths and needs affect their transition into post-secondary education, and interventions that can be utilized in secondary education to assist this population in this transition.
