Inner Energy Management Training: A Proposed 10 Session Training Module for the Personal Self-Regulation Requirement of the BCIA Biofeedback Certification

Self-regulation is the ability to intentionally adapt to changes in the environment (Khazan, 2013). While our body can typically regulate itself, stressors in the environment can overpower these regulatory systems, resulting in dysregulation (Mate & Mate, 2022). The ability to intentionally regulate oneself in the face of stress is important, especially for those with repeated high stress jobs, such as mental health professionals (Acker, 2011). Research has begun to explore the impact of stress on burnout and examine both treatment and prevention interventions (Bell et al., 2023). However, there is still minimal attention paid to how to incorporate burnout prevention within clinical training programs (Gennaro et al., 2019). Biofeedback is an intervention that allows individuals to explore their body's physiological reactions and use this feedback to learn how to regulate their body's response to stress (Khazan, 2013). The Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA) has taken steps to integrate self-regulation training into their certification program for general biofeedback by requiring 10 individual training sessions (Biofeedback Certification International Alliance, 2023). However, there is limited structure and guidance of how to use these required sessions to increase self-regulation within the individual. A 10-session training manual is proposed to provide structure and guidance for these sessions to increase self-regulation. This manual utilizes evidence-based modalities and strategies informed by relevant interventions to guide sessions. Future direction for research and the limitations of the proposed manual are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
