Diana Gerges
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Peter's University
While many policy makers attempt to close the educational divide, precollege programs have the ability to creating a college going culture and develop college aspirations throughout the entire K-12 pipeline. Exposure to college culture and the college system grants students opportunities to develop college aspirations, skills, confidence, and readiness. Additionally, early preparedness impacts educational and college attainment goals at an early age. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the perceptions of middle school students who participate in a pre College program offered through Paterson Public Schools. The study explores ways the program fosters and supports college going aspirations of its middle school participants, prepares them for college work, college degree attainment, and provides college access. Eight brief interviews were conducted for this research study to help assess middle school participants' experiences with the college bound program. The four key research findings from the data support the mentoring literature pertaining to the theory of adolescent identity development, proving those between the ages of 13 and 15, are experimenting with and developing identity and roles as they explore and engage in experiences that shape their identity and gear the direction of their future goals. Precollege programs support and motivate marginalized and underrepresented adolescents to attend college and attain a college degree during stages of identity development. The findings show how precollege programs can prepare participants for the college system, culture capitals of college, intellectually, and motivationally. College bound programs make College going a reality, rather than a farfetched unattainable goal for young scholars.
