What Is the Effectiveness of Positive Behavior in the Urban Classroom?

The urban classroom environment presents unique challenges related to student behavior and classroom management. This dissertation investigates the effectiveness of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as a proactive approach to addressing these challenges. The study examines the impact of PBIS implementation in urban schools, focusing on improving student behavior, enhancing classroom climate, and ultimately contributing to improved academic outcomes. This research employs a qualitative approach, analyzing behavior data and assessments of the experiences of educators and students involved in PBIS programs. The study utilizes pre- and post-implementation data to assess changes in student behavior, disciplinary actions, and academic performance. Additionally, it explores the perceptions, attitudes, and experiences of teachers, administrators, and students regarding the PBIS framework. The findings indicate a significant positive impact of PBIS on reducing disruptive behaviors, decreasing disciplinary incidents, and creating a more positive classroom climate at George Washington Preparatory High School (GWPHS). Moreover, the study reveals that PBIS contributes to improved academic engagement and achievement among students. Teachers and administrators report increased job satisfaction and a more supportive school culture because of PBIS implementation. This dissertation underscores the importance of proactive, evidence-based approaches like PBIS in addressing behavior challenges at GWPHS and highlights the potential for positive outcomes in terms of student behavior and academic performance. It also provides practical insights for educators, administrators, and policymakers seeking to create more effective and inclusive learning environments at GWPHS.
