Community College Presidents' Leadership Characteristics and Their Relationship to Organizational Culture
Courtney Gaynor
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Community colleges face difficulty finding qualified presidents in the face of retirements and decreased tenure in the role. While leadership in higher education continues to be researched, there has been a lack of understanding of the connection of community college presidents' leadership to the organizational culture of their colleges. This basic qualitative study provided an examination of how community college presidents' leadership characteristics related to their colleges' organizational culture. Administrators who had regular, direct contact with their college presidents were interviewed and served as the primary data source. The semistructured interviews were supplemented by online documents found on colleges' websites and the researcher's interview journal. Thirteen administrators from thirteen different community colleges across the United States provided their perspectives. Administrators provided responses to semistructured interview questions on their college president's leadership, their college's organizational culture, and how the two may be connected. The identified themes of the research findings were (a) the importance of a student and/or employee centered organizational culture, (b) the purpose of the college's organizational culture, (c) the positive value of open and transparent communication from a college president, (d) the significance of presidents' support of administration, and (e) the connection of presidents' leadership to the organizational culture. The findings indicated that administrators were able to connect leadership characteristics of their president to their organizational culture. Based upon the findings, it is recommended that further research be conducted on how community college presidential candidates' leadership characteristics are known before hiring and how they are measured as being complementary to an existing organizational culture for keeping the culture the same, or as a challenge to the existing organizational culture for the purpose of implementing needed change.
