The Effectiveness of a Faith-Based Mentoring Program as Perceived by a Multidisciplinary Leadership Team on a PK-8 Campus in Southwest Louisiana

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once stated, "'Faith' is taking the first step even when you can't see the whole staircase." (Waterford, 2020). This type of blind faith has been a vocal proponent in the triumphs of minorities since the beginning of time (Liviatan, 2011). It is this same faith that William James speaks of when he says, "In any project, the most important factor is the belief in success (Goodman, 2017). Without faith, success is impossible." Since faith has been identified as a predicate for success (Irwin, 2002), mentoring programs whose primary objective is to ultimately assist in the holistic success of the child should also be founded upon such faith. Many mentoring programs have attempted to bridge the gap between the absence of a parent and the social-emotional wellbeing of a child (Leary, 2018). However, very few have had a lasting impact as that of faith-based organizations (Killeen, 2017). Thus, this qualitative study describes the effectiveness of a faith-based mentoring program as perceived by a multidisciplinary leadership team at a PK-8 campus in Southwest Louisiana. Using a homogenous sampling technique to select participants, the researcher conducted one focus group interview with the campus leadership team comprised of teachers, program facilitators, administrators, and parents. The purpose of this interview was to answer the following research question: How effective are faith-based mentoring programs at mitigating negative behaviors as perceived by a multidisciplinary leadership team at a PK-8 campus in Southwest Louisiana?
