Lakeiah Cheatham
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This qualitative phenomenological study explored teacher perceptions of teacher retention in suburban schools meeting the criteria to be Title I schools. This research was focused on the following research questions: (1) What are common factors contributing to teacher retention in a Title I public school?, (2) Do years of teacher experience relate to teacher perceptions of teacher retention?, and (3) What are teacher perceptions of factors contributing to teacher attrition?Interviews were conducted with 10 certified teachers with a range of experience about their perceptions of how to retain educators. The teachers were employed in suburban schools meeting the criteria for Title I schools within the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex. The teacher responses were collected and organized based on themes to interpret the findings. In summation, there is no simple solution to retain teachers, yet a positive work environment and the belief teachers have in their students' ability to succeed were found to be a couple of overarching themes preceding several other subthemes. Particularly, understanding the perspectives of teachers who choose to stay in Title I schools would benefit school systems all over the nation.
