Muscular Christianity within College Football Coaching: The Creation of a Safe Space for Religion in the Academy
Nick Edward Pearce
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana University
Although scholars have analyzed Muscular Christianity as it has emerged throughout European and American cultural and religious history, this dissertation explores and unearths how scholarly attention is not currently being focused on how Evangelical college football coaches are utilizing Muscular Christianity to ground their coaching philosophy and practice. Even though popular and scholarly references to Muscular Christianity have dwindled, I argue that there is a growing population of college football coaches within American Higher Education that are the heirs to this historical movement. Present day Evangelical Muscular Christian Football Coaches have gained a foothold within the academy. This religious movement within college football should be attributed to retired coaches such as Bobby Bowden, formerly of Florida State University, and coaches such Dabo Swinney and Mark Richt, at Clemson University and most recently at the University of Miami respectively. The following characteristics are utilized within this dissertation to define these figures and describe their form of practice: (1) Male leadership, without formal religious training; (2) The use of Christianity to guide young men within their society and institutions; (3) Individualistic/Evangelical theological foundation; and (4) A desire to be a force within both societal religious and popular/secular culture. The primary phase of data collection consisted of document and artifact review. By reviewing biographies, media guides, electronic and print newspaper articles, and blog posts, the researcher was able to unearth the Evangelical musings of many of these figures and commit them to pages of this dissertation. This also aided in the creation of a map of where this phenomena specifically exists within the academy today. By taking up arms as the heirs of Muscular Christianity, Evangelical Muscular Christian Football coaches have gained a foothold within the academy that provides a safe space for to practice their religion.
