Teacher Retention in Title I Schools
Nashae M. Bennett
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
Low rates of teacher retention in Title I schools is negatively impacting teaching and learning for our neediest students. When teachers do not stay in schools for 10 or more years, they lack the institutional memory and social capital needed to build and sustain strong relationships with school constituencies. Working in a Title I school for 10 or more years may improve work conditions through sustained long-term supportive professional relationships resulting in higher rates of teacher retention. Higher rates of teacher retention provide students with a robust educational experience and establish strong interpersonal relationships with the adults by whom they are taught. Given the low teacher retention in Title I schools, it is important to examine the experiences of the teachers' that stay beyond 10 years of service. Gaining teachers' perspectives about why they continue to work in Title I Schools helps school systems understand how to replicate conditions which may result in the retention of experienced teachers for Title I schools. This study used qualitative methods to examine teachers' experiences relative to their decisions to remain in Title I schools for more than 10 years. Qualitative methods were used to allow teachers to respond to open-ended questions during semi-structured interviews.
