Online Together and Working Apart: An Ethnographic Investigation of the Telepractice eHelper in Speech-Language Pathology
Lesley Edwards-Gaither
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Howard University
When speech and language services are provided via telepractice, the online and remote Speech-Language Pathologist (eSLP) may collaborate with an additional in-person facilitator or "eHelper" who is present with the student. Although the eHelper and eSLP may work collaboratively online, they may never meet in-person. The social constructs of developing an online relationship and culture between the eHelper and the remote eSLP are under-researched when compared to the in-person model of speech-language pathology services. This study utilized ethnographic techniques, including participant observation, interviews, and field notes, to describe how culture is built during telepractice sessions between the eHelper and the eSLP. Results revealed three themes related to eHelper's role and identity in telepractice, including interpersonal culture, teletherapeutic culture, and the eHelper's role as an in-person "Telepractice Champion". Discussion includes a call for consensus as to the eHelper's title, a model for the social construction of telepractice, and post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) implications for telepractice and speech-language pathology.
