A Quantitative Study on the Correlation between Homework and the Parent-Child Relationship
Susan Cappello
ProQuest LLC, D.E. Dissertation, Charleston Southern University
The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the correlation between homework and the parent-child relationship. Homework can be a controversial practice as there are strong opinions on both sides regarding the validity of its practice. However, little research has been completed on the relationship between homework and how well parents and their children get along. This study examined three questions related to this topic. First, it explored the correlation between homework and the nature of communication which occurs between parents and their school-age children. The second research question examined the correlation between homework and the relationship between parents and their school-age children. Finally, the study looked at the relationship between completing homework and a child's participation in extra-curricular activities. Using a Likert-scale survey, parents and students provided their perspectives on questions related to homework and their relationship both before and after a period of the child not having to complete homework. This no-homework treatment was intended to allow the researcher to see if perceptions changed, thereby allowing the researcher to determine if correlations exist between homework and how parents and their children get along with one another. The study took place at Southeastern School District in South Carolina. Students in fourth and fifth grade and their parents completed the surveys. Data was analyzed for correlation, and measures of central tendency were taken to observe trends. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
