I Want to Be a Mentor, Teacher, and Just a Resource: Supporting First-Generation Students within and beyond Higher Education

The presence of first-generation college students (FGCS) continues to grow in post-secondary education. However, their success rates have not kept the same pace. Only 27% of first-generation college students earn degrees within four years (Whitley et al., 2018). The purpose of this research study was to co-create supports with participants and stakeholders to ensure the success of first-generation students in transitioning out of the institution. Cycle 1 explored the academic and social experiences of FGCS by conducting one-on-one semi-structured interviews with students, faculty, and staff. From the conversations with these participants, several themes emerged in supportive relationships, personal and professional growth, and understanding of the needs of first-generation college students. Based on this information, the action step process focused on providing additional support services and resources to prepare students to successfully transition out of the institution and feel confident to move forward into their next ventures. In Cycle 2, students, faculty, and staff were engaged through meetings, semi-structured interviews, and exit interview surveys. The collaboration of academic and student affairs and community stakeholders' participation showed how the college handled challenges through adversity during its last academic year and the transformative experiences students had in being a part of this community. The Cycle 2 action steps led to developing a resource website covering topics to support FCGS needs in housing resources, career development, graduate school guide, finding support in transferring colleges, support services for low-income students, and adulting 101.
