ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of Out-of-Field (OOF) teachers in urban schools, and how they are impacted (psychologically, physiologically, cognitively, and socially). The research utilized three theories: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg's Two-Factor Motivation Theory, and Bandura's Theory of Self-Efficacy. The research goal was to understand the lived experiences by exploring the following aspects of out-of-field teaching: teacher efficacy, teacher shortages, retention, qualifications, and job and personal satisfaction. The methodology used for the study was interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), using semi-structured interviews researchers found that several themes emerged to explain OOF teachers lived experiences. The findings will help address the gap in the research about the impact of out-of-field teaching on educators.
