An Analysis of the Journey of International Students in the United States: A Qualitative Study

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trident University International
As the world increasingly operates in a global environment, academia has also shifted its mission to include global perspectives on college campuses. This academic phenomenon has led to the enrollment of more international learners. The international student population has grown exponentially recently, and higher education institutions must evolve to support these students. Educational systems need to survey their student population to understand their needs effectively. There are existing gaps in the knowledge of this student population and misconceptions about who they are as individuals and collectively. This research study aimed to illuminate the international students' unique experiences through all the stages of their journey with a qualitative methodology approach, including semi-structured interviews with international students to explore their personal and academic experiences. One potential outcome of this research is the elimination of these preconceptions to better understand how to provide a supportive learning environment for this student population. The institutional administrators' and leaders' investment in this unique group of students is beneficial to both the students and their institutions. With greater insight into the lives of international students, campus leaders can more effectively implement best practices that ensure the welfare of their students and support persistence. The presence of international students on campus is valuable to the learning community as it brings a global perspective to campus and enriches the experience of both students and faculty.
